12 | Matthew Scarlett on Belief, Communication and The Never Ending Journey of Self Improvement
Description
In what proves to be an amazing follow up to last week's episode with Mark Blicavs, today I sit down with Geelong Cats Legend, Matthew Scarlett.
Scarlo played 284 games in the hoops, a 6-time All-Australian, triple premiership player and AFL Hall of Fame Inductee. Once retired, he returned to the Cats in a coaching role, having great success in building one of the most formidable defences in the AFL. Given his CV, you could forgive him for being a little arrogant, but Scarlo is anything but. As humble as they come, he prides himself on living in the moment and passing along his wisdom and the life lessons he has learned over his stellar career to those fortunate enough to be guided by him.
Currently coaching Football at Barwon Heads and within the Western Heights College AFL Program, there's no shortage of people lining up to pick his brains.
Today, we go into the turning point within the Geelong Football Club and how their famous, team first culture was established, we discuss the importance of trust, belief and communication when building high performing teams and how self reflection is a crucial aspect when it comes to coaching.
The really cool thing to me is, last week hearing Mark's view on the Cats culture from a player's perspective, and this week hearing how it was created from a key part of the building process. The two conversations give an incredible insight into how truly special of a place that the Geelong Football Club is.
A true legend of the game, Scarlo will go down as one of the best to ever do it.
Keep chasing...
